Matthaei Botanical Gardens & Nichols Arboretum
Library Search Tips

Searching by Inputting Terms:

There are many choices offered to search the Matthaei Botanical Gardens and Nichols Arboretum Library. As the catalog contains only the information one would find on a papercatalog card, terms used to search should be short. For example, to search for a specific author, try just entering the last name (e.g., Smith) or both first and last, but abbreviate the first name (e.g., Hobhouse, P.).

Also try using the wildcard character "%" to increase your results. Placing it in the middle of wom%n will return woman or women. Placing it at the end of ros% will return rose, or roses, or rosaceae. But be careful, it will also return erosion.

If you are looking for something specific, limit your search by selecting a field like Author or Title. If you are looking for a general topic, use the Search all fields options which is pre-selected. This will search Author, Title, Subject, Notes and Added Topics fields in the catalog.

Searching by Browsing

If you want a specific topic, use the drop-down menu to select the Library of Congress Subject Heading which most closely matches. Please note that options that say "See" will not return any choices - these indicate that you should chose the offered subject instead.

If you already have an idea what the call number is that you want, enter a starting call number . If you don't, try browsing the drop-down menu options to start browsing a call number range. Generally, the call numbers starting with Q refer to Botany and the ones starting with S deal with horticulture. The collection covers many more interesting subjects in the other call number ranges.
